THE LAKE OF DESPAIR QUIZ

The shallows by the lake shore were teeming with black caimans, some as long as five metres. There was no place free of crocodiles that Leo and his guide Alfonso could land their canoe. But land they had to; their crudely constructed craft had taken a bashing from enormous waves that had sprung up from nowhere during the crossing. The canoe was shipping water and the two men thought it might sink. Besides, Leo and Alfonso were exhausted. They needed to rest. They needed to eat. They needed to get to dry land.

There was tree with a low branch that hung over the water. Leo ran the length of the boat and managed to swing himself up to safety. Alfonso wasn’t so lucky. The crocodiles that had been log-still moments before, had sensed the movement, and as Alfonso jumped for the branch, they went for the kill. One got his leg. Alfonso kicked himself free of that one. But by then another had bitten his arm, nearly ripping it right off. Up on his branch Leo stared in horror as his companion disappeared under the red stained water in a thrashing mass of blood-crazed crocodiles.

Leo knew he must not let himself be frozen by fear into doing nothing. He had to get back to the boat. But he could not reach it. And, he could not get back into the water to get to it.
