BEST CASE. You wake up in the morning. Another fantastic African dawn.
Everything is covered in a layer of dew. The early morning rays of
sunlight are slanting over the savannah, highlighting the shiny, turquoise
feathers of the glossy starlings that are flying overhead. There is
a flock of guinea fowl pecking around the ground around your camp.
Everything is peaceful. Everything is calm.

WORST CASE. You wake up in the morning. A wind whipped
up during the night, sending up sparks from the embers of your fire
that set the bush ablaze. The antelopes and zebras that use this
game trail were frightened into stampeding over your tent. A Hyena,
attracted by the scent of the meat you left out decided that your
arm which was sticking out of the (termite-nibbled) wreckage of your
tent would make a far better meal. When you felt it bite and hastily
pulled your arm back into cover, you heard a hiss and felt a moist,
fork tongue flicker over your face. You are sharing your sleeping
bag with a poisonous puff adder. So it’s your choice. Stay
in the tent with the snake or go out and face the hyena.

You were lucky this time. Your camp is intact.
Everything’s
fine - or is it? Which hazard was not mentioned in ‘the worst
case’?
Answer. The scorpion in your shoe. You must remember
to shake out any unwelcome ‘guests’ before you out them
on.
Luckily any snakes that are in the grass are too sluggish and
dozy in the cool morning dew to bother striking you. You cook up
some breakfast and pack up your tent to the calls of the mourning
dove “Work harder..work harder” and the “Go away” bird,
then you drive off into the savannah once more.
